When I was away at the booksellers and publishers meeting at High Leigh we had the opportunity to listen to Chick Yuill who was one of the main speakers leading devotions.
I have not heard him speak before (ok if i’m honest I had not been aware of him either even though he has written several book). But that may all change. he was a very inspirational speaker, full of passion for his subject – discipleship. His talk was very practical and easy to follow so I have now started reading his latest book Moving in the Right Circles – Embrace the discipleship adventure. (You will gather from the various entries to the blog that I rarely read books from cover to cover one at a time but rather have several books on the go at any one time)
His latest book is looking at the role that discipleship has in a Christian’s life and it stems from the reality that discipleship is a committment to Christ that is not an option. He says in his introduction that he is writing to those who are drawn to Jesus but are tempted to despair at the church. “What follows is an attempt to centre everything on the call of Jesus, the invitation to know him and to follow him as his disciples. But discipleship is not membership in an emergancy plan for a safe evacuation of the faithful to ‘a better place’. Rather, discipleship is enlisting in God’s resurrection project for the world that he created. It is a world that he sustains by his word of power, that he loved enough to die for, and that he will one day heal from every hurt and wound”
But then he follows that with a warning “So, please read on. But be warned – if you take his challenge seriously it will be no easy ride. It will be gruelling as well as glorious. It will, in truth, cost you everything. But it will be the best bargain you ever made…”
All that I have read so far in the book (several chapters) has shown that this is a very readable and practical book that brings a challenge to the priorities that we hold in our lives.
